Renowned journalist, two-time Peabody Award winner and TV journalist
with Dateline
NBC.
Community Service Award: Jimmy Gerkin: Friend and supporter to all the
students at East Grand Rapids High School. Jimmy was ever present at school
events and always ready with a smile and a hug. |

William Seidman, ’39:
CNBC-TV Chief Commentator on business and economics, he has served as
Chief Executive
Office of BDO Seidman, assistant to the President Gerald Ford of U.S.
Economic Affairs. Director and board member of Phelps, Dodge, Inc., Federal
Deposit
Insurance Corporation, GVSU.
Community Service Award: The William H. Edison Family: Recognized
for their collective years of service to the city and schools of East
Grand Rapids
as members on city council and school board and as mayor. |

Distinguished Alumnus: David
A. Tarantino, Jr., MD, ’83:
A family practice physician/flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, he was in
the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 and decorated for heroism for life saving
rescue efforts on that day.
Community Service Award: Bill and Sue Fowler: The Fowlers were instrumental
in developing, organizing and managing the concessions for East Grand Rapids
High School athletic events that set the standard for successful fundraising
for EGR sports. |

Distinguished Alumnus: Chris
VanAllsburg, ’67: Award
winning children’s
author/illustrator. His book The Polar Express won the Caldecott Award
and his books Jumanji, The Polar Express, and Zathura have all been made
into major motion pictures.
Community Service Award: David P. Mehney, ’57: A life-long
member of the East Grand Rapids community, Dave Mehney has served on several
city
and school boards. He has been instrumental in many community fundraising
efforts and has demonstrated a deep commitment to the continued growth
of his hometown. |

Distinguished
Alumnus: William George, '60: Professor of Management at Harvard
Business School, where he teaches leadership development. He is also
the author of the best-selling book, Authentic Leadership: Rediscovering
the Secrets to Creating Lasting Value.
Community Service Award: Judy
Frey: A leader in the community, serving as mayor, school board president,
founder and president of the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation,
as well as serving on numerous regional committees and boards in the
public service and educational arena. |

Distinguished
Alumnus: Member of the award winning CBS News Sunday Morning. Her assignments as a foreign correspondent have included: Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, the exodus of Haitian and Cuban refugees to the U.S., and the war in El Salvador.
Community Service Award: East boys and girls swim coach for thirty-four years, mentored over 1,500 swimmers, and won 23 state championships. Butch continues to leave a legacy of commitment to East swimmers. |
